a cover/adaptation of a beautiful and haunting song from the Amami Islands, in the northern Ryuukyuus, south of Japan. I found this song through recordings by the singer Ikue Asazaki, who sings in the style of Shima-uta. From wikipedia:
"The word shima (島) means "island" in Japanese. In Amami Ōshima and other islands, it also means (one's own) community within the island. Such a semantic extension can be understood by the fact that many communities had little contact with the outside because they were geographically isolated by the vast sea in the front and heavy mountains in the back."
To me this is reminiscent of the traditional music of Cres, where isolated communities developed their own musical traditions.
recorded on the beach at sunset as close as possible to the waves.
